Kim Yates talks about her upcoming 2010 Kim's Krypt Haunt
Haunted House News: This will be your last year in having Kim's Krypt in Dundalk. Have you found a new location for next year, and do you have any special memories running your haunt in Dundalk?
Kim Yates: We have not found a new location yet but we are looking if anyone has land, property or a big scary building at least 7,000 SF. There are so many great memories. One of the best was when I had to play a wedding with my band Scaret Angel but I showed up to the Krypt and went through with the last group. I had my friend Rita fill in as me for the evening. She had my severed head, black curly wig, robe, make up, blood and all. She did an awesome job. I was very proud of everyone and was actually suprised at how great everything looked from a different perspective. Most of my actors didn't even know it was me, I had my Kim's Krypt hoodie up trying to blend in.
Haunted House News: Out of all the owners I met, you clearly have the most love for the haunted attraction industry. You are probally the most famous name when it comes to haunted attraction events in Maryland. When you were younger, did you ever dream you would have a haunt as big as it is now?
Kim Yates:
No, not at all. I always loved halloween, horror and scaring people, creating scenes and the rush of it all. I started decorating more and more of the yard, trees, windows, roof, and the lines just started growing so me and some friends started scaring people and it developed that way. I met some incredible actors, fx, make up and builders along the way to make Kim's Krypt Haunted Attraction what it is today.
Haunted House News: Of all the haunts I visited last year, you clearly have the best actors and actresses I have seen. A few of them even appeared on the "Chainsaw Sally Show" which I am a big fan of. Is there a secret to getting so many talented people, or is it just good training once the agree to join Kim's Krypt?
Kim Yates: I feel there is a place for everyone at the Krypt. Some of the stronger actors have been with me for years and others just grow and develope over time. I push for perfection and explain the scare and scare again tactic. It's about the total package as well, most of the volunteers that we get have horror in there heart like I do, or at least a bloody heart, yum!
Haunted House News: My review group was blown away last year when we visited. It was clearly one of the funnest haunts we visited. I know this is the last year for you all in Dundalk, so you probally want to go out with a bang. What can we expect this upcoming season?
Kim Yates: This October is the Karnival of Karnage. Clowns, mazes, chainsaws, and some big surprises. Some of your favorites like Scary Jerry the beefcakes are even more menacing that ever. Sally Sue is now a year older and wants to share some bloody cotton candy with you if you are good! More scares, more creatures, more energy and yes, more blood.
Haunted House News: Is there anything you want to add? It can be on any subject or topic, this is your chance to say anything you want.
Kim Yates: Thanks to all of the Krypt volunteers for a great 17 years and hopefully we will find new place for 2011. Also thank you for the great interviews and your cotinued support. All of the fans, supporters, sponsors and contributors. Check the website for future events, car shows, my 68 Black Caddy Hearse that you can rent for proms, weddings or any occasion. Parades (we took 3rd this year in the Dundalk Parade and 1st in the Rosadle parade). Birthday parties at the Krypt have been a blast and this is your last chance to have one up untill December 2010.www.kimskrypt.com

Kim's Krypt
Interview with the Queen of Halloween!!
Kim's Krypt, is perhaps the most famous and well known haunted attraction every October in Maryland. Kim becomes a local celebrity every October, she has been on 98 Rock, dozens of other radio and news outlets, there are even Kim toys, made after her(check out her website), and this October she will be featured in Baltimore Magazine. We recently had a chance to get a interview with the "Queen of Halloween" and this is what she said.
Haunted House News: You are considered the "Queen of Halloween" here in Maryland. How did you first get the idea, that you oneday wanted to run your own haunted house?
Kim's Krypt: I have always loved scaring people and decorating my house, but I never imagined it would get to this. Every year my collection grew so did my Halloween/Horror display, and so did the lines of people who would come out to see it. So it went from Halloween night back when I was living with my parents to the 12 days of Halloween at my house in Rosedale (ooooo) to every weekend in October like it is now.
Haunted House News: Is this your only job all year, or do you have to do a normal job in the Halloween off-season?
Kim's Krypt: I do so many things the whole year round. I am the field supervisor for the Emergency Response Units that respond to incidents and accidents on our highways. I am a drum teacher and play drums and sing back up vocals in the 3 quarter female band, Scarlet Angel. www.scarletangelrocks.com We play just about every weekend, so that keeps me very busy as well. I provide Hearse rental's for proms, weddings, parties and outings. Kim's Krypt also has Birthday Parties at the Krypt when we are not in operation.
Haunted House News: If someone wanted to get there own haunted house/attraction started, what would be the best advice you would give them?
Kim's Krypt: Understand what scares people and why. Go to other Haunted Houses, ask questions, learn from others. Be as original as you can, create your own scenes while still incorporation what people can relate to. Put your heart into it, step back, look at your creation from another angle, get others opinion, get a new perspective. Not everyone is the same height, that is so important. I have gone through haunts where everything is one dimentional and catering to a tall person, so every one else suffers because they cant appreciate the scare because they can't see it.
Haunted House News: What can haunt fans expect this October from Kim's Krypt?
Kim's Krypt: Confinement! Seclusion! Seperation! Confusion! We have some new rooms as well as some great new helpers. We had a great 4th of July Weekend and so many people loved our new characters so we brought them back for our Halloween edition. We are changing the Exorcist room to be the scariest yet. That has always been my favorite room and now it has been recently updated. Don't worry she is still possesed.
Haunted House News: If you had to pick a favorite memory from all the years you done Kim's Krypt, what would it be?
Kim's Krypt: There are so many great times and scary good memories, but my ultimate favorite would be the time that I freaked out Alice Cooper at the HorrorFind Convention. Kim's Krypt always sets up a table at the HorrorFind Weekend and we have our characters in costume and I was in full makeup, scary beads, bloody severed head and all. Alice Cooper was signing autographs and there was a massive line of people to meet him. I was entering the line as we waited so when it was my turn I was so excited. I kind of have a very energetic personality and when I am in Kim's Krypt mode it esalates. Alice was a little shocked when he saw me and my own severed head in my hand and we had our conversation, I got my autograph and he said "Nothing a little prosac and a mallet can't cure". He also said the Kim's Krypt was the scariest Haunted House this side of the Mississippi. We have that on our 2001 video that is for sale on the website. www.kimskrypt.com
Haunted House News: Would you like to add anything to this interview? This is your time to say anything on any subject you want.
Kim's Krypt: I would like to thank all the volunteers that have worked at Kim's Krypt Haunted Attraction, past and present. I couldn't do it with out you. I would also like to thank of all of the crazy people who have visited Kim's Krypt Haunted Attraction during the Halloween season, as well as our off-season haunts. Kim's Krypt is the only haunted house crazy enough to open for seasonal events such as, Christmas Weekend(Kim's Kryptmas). Friday the 13th weekend(I got splattered). Valentine's Weekend(Put a hex on your ex). And the 4th of July Weekend(O say can you scream!). Each season has an appropriate theme that corresponds with that holiday along with a themed shirt that you can buy online or at the concession stand. Please come back again and visit us. It has been updated and you won't want to miss the new additions this year. Plus we need fresh blood and new meet....

Interview with Horror Legend "Scary" Jerry West
The man they call Scary Jerry, has become one of Marylands best, when it comes to scaring the living daylights out of people. He is a legendary actor, set designer for Kim's Krypt. He was also a featured actor on episode 3 of the ChainSaw Sally Show. I have to admit there is some jealousy here, being Jerry got to work side by side with my favorite actress in the world....April Burril aka ChainSaw Sally. I recently had the chance to interview the Haunt legend Scary Jerry West. And here is what he had to say.....
Haunted House News: Tell readers a little about yourself, and why you call yourself Scary Jerry.
Scary Jerry West: I came from a very hard childhood. I have seen and experienced more growing up on the west side, of our beautiful downtown Baltimore, in 16 years then most people do in a lifetime. It made me what I am today. Somehow I understand, just about how all things work, and how people think and react. I also love to create scenes, build them, and get the response I designed them for. I choose to create all these things at a haunted house. Working and performing at Kim's Krypt and other previous Haunts, really allows me to do what I love, that is to scare people over and over, even when they have been before and know what I am about. As to the name Scary Jerry, I never chose that for myself. The name is something people started calling me, after seeing me perform. However sincethus, it has become a common name for me, and people seem to relate it to the krypt, so I continue to use it.
Haunted House News: What is your position at Kim's Krypt?
Scary Jerry West: Lets just say I am there jack of all trades. My volunteer work for Kim's Krypt is extensive. I help with set design and concept. I am very involved in the construction and practically of set design. Also I perform in a couple of rooms each night we are open.
Haunted House News: How much fun is it working at Kim's Krypt?
Scary Jerry West: You ask whats fun. I ask whats not? From concept to reality I enjoy the entire process. If I could do what I do for the Krypt and make a living at it I would. Working for a Haunt is my passion. It's also fun watching someone lose control of there self(if you know what I mean) from my performance.
Haunted House News: Why should Haunt fans attend Kim's Krypt this October?
Scary Jerry West: Thats simple! Haunt fans must attend Kim's Krypt this season because we do our best to give them what they're going to a Haunt for. We design and test everything extensively to get the full effect. The Krypt draws you in and keeps you on your toes from begining to end. Our Krypt is also interactive. The audience is encouraged to participate with the actors and will need to pass through some unsettling situations. This is all to fully stimulate all of your senses and immerse you completly within the experience.
Haunted House News: Is there anything you would like to add? You can say anything on any topic or subject you choose.
Scary Jerry West: Come one, come all, and have a memorable experience you wont forget for a lifetime. If you like my work, I have a small part in a episode of the ChainSaw Sally Show. It's the third episode of the show. Some of the scenes were filmed locally at our very own Kim's Krypt. The web address(for the ChainSaw Sally Show) is http://chainsawsallyshow.com/
I would like to thank Scary Jerry West for taking time out to do this interview. And we here at Haunted House News look forward to visiting Kim's Krypt on Oct. 3rd.

Kim's Krypt: One of America's BEST HAUNTED ATRACTIONS! OUR REVIEW!!
Kim's Krypt: One of America's Best Haunted Attractions! (Top Left) Kim holding her replica head. (Top Right) "Scary" Jerry West poses with a meat cleaver. (Bottom Left) 2 actors come out to entertain the crowd while they wait in line.(Bottom Right) The hearse which sits outside of Kim's Krypt. You can take a hearse ride for only $3!! Our Official Review and Score Card for Kim's Krypt!!
Kim Yates owner of the haunted attraction Kim's Krypt is perhaps the most energetic haunt owner in America. And tonight my review group found out first hand, why they call her "The Queen of Halloween". Kim's love for the haunted house industry shows big time in her event. We were amazed at how good this haunted attraction was! Every room was so well planned inside this haunt, that it could easily be America's Best Haunted House! The actors are just on another talent level from one's we seen at other events. They even have legendary actor "Scary" Jerry West who can be seen online in the Chainsaw Sally Show(episode 3).
Scary Jerry in our opinion is one of the best haunted attraction actors in America. After the event, he chased my daughter through the parking lot. In perhaps the funniest moment I have ever seen, Scary Jerry walking in the parking lot, approached a slow moving car in the parking lot with his chainsaw running. The other actors, were just as good! I would deffiently say this could be the best group of actors in one single haunt.
I never reveal whats inside the haunted attraction, I let you find out first hand. But as soon as you enter, you can just tell this is going to be good. There were 2 things inside her Krypt that I have never seen in my life. These 2 things were so innovative, that I was blown away, as well as my review group! And these 2 things are in the first 2 rooms after you meet Kim Yates. The first thing actually had me very nervous and a little bit afraid. It was so crazy that even I was worried.
But that is how haunted houses should be! There were a couple of bikers who walked with our group inside the Krypt, they were a little afraid as well. Then the 2nd thing, was easily the best haunted attraction scene I have ever seen. But overall this haunt is as good as any in America. They even offer Hearse rides for only $3. http://www.kimskrypt.com/home.html
And now for the moment of truth, here is the official score from our review group. I have each member rank the events on a 1-10. With 10 being the best.
Tim Lumber(me) 10
James Meeker(co-owner) 10
Mary Lumber 10
Chelsey Buschmann 10
Kim Meeker 10
Alan Buschmann 10
Kim's Krypt would get a perfect score. She would recieve a 60 out of a possible 60. This event was so good, that you have to put it on the same level as big time events like Field of Screams who was our only other perfect 10 rated event, and only other event to get 60 points. Kim's Krypt is clearly one of the Top 5 haunts in America. I guarantee you NO other haunt owner has the love for the haunt industry like Kim does.
When we rank our events, one of the most critical things is, value. Is the event worth the ticket price. This is the only event I have attended where I will honestly say, Kim could charge more! Current ticket prices are $12 for adults and children 11 and under are only $7. That is what I call value! And its a big reason why I started this website. In a tight economy, money has to be spent wisely. If you are going to take a date/friends or your family out to a haunted attraction, you better get your money's worth.
And Kim's Krypt is a great value! I would highly recomend going to Kim's Krypt! What are you going to do this weekend? You are going to go to Kim's Krypt and have some fun! If you love haunted houses, and don't go to Kim's Krypt....then you are NOT a real fan of haunted houses! Kim's Krypt is open every Friday, Saturday and even Sunday in October and she is also open Sunday November 1st as well. Here is the location, this weekend, take a TRIP to Kim's KRYPT!! Her location is listed below...
