One Night of Terror
Interview with One Night of Terror's very own Jason Mccarty
He has perhaps the most famous yard haunt in all of Maryland. He is a horror acting legend who will be appearing this year at Kim's Krypt. His name is Jason Mccarty, and we recently had a chance to do a interview with him, and here is what he had to say...
Haunted House News:
How did you first decide to start your own yard haunt(One Night of Terror)?
Jason Mccarty: It all started when I was a kid there was a Halloween store in the Mall that had what seemed to be a robotic clown with an electric cord coming from his back standing in the entrance of the store. I started to enter the store when I realized the clown was real, and he started chasing me. I ran out of the store so fast my parents had to catch up with me. It was then I realized how much fun it was to be the one scaring people. That’s just one of the things that started my Home Haunt addiction. I was twelve years old when I started to stand in my parents front yard as still as I could in a scary costume. I waited for the perfect moment to give someone a scare. My parents and friends even joined in to help. We started scaring all the Trick or Treaters who dared to enter the yard.
I really started to get more serious when I met my wife. She also loves Halloween. Every year we would go to as many Haunt’s as we could. Together we started scaring on Halloween night, and now we have a small but strong crew. Through the years I started building my own pneumatic props and other illusions that we used to scare our victims. Each year we seem to grow bigger. Which is why I decided to give us the name One Night of Terror. It seems to fit, because we only open on Halloween night. The goal is to ultimately become a full Haunted Attraction. I figure the name will still fit because on whatever night you come to our attraction it will be your one night of terror! Haunted House News:
Is this event just held in your yard or is it inside the house as well?
Jason Mccarty: We only use the front yard, which is pretty small. We live in a town home, which isn’t much bigger then the yard, and we usually have family and friends over. We try to bring a feel of what the bigger Haunts have to offer. Hopefully this will get people in the mood to visit others!
Haunted House News: Your One Night of Terror group is helping out Kims Krypt this year. How much fun is it working for a haunt legend like Kim?
Jason Mccarty: Yes, this year we will be volunteering some nights at Kim’s Krypt. It’s been pretty crazy. Kim is nonstop I don’t know where she gets all her energy (Rip It, Yeah, Come On!). It’s a good experience, I get to learn how she runs and manages her Haunt. There are a lot of new things being added and changed. We have been going there just about every night to help build, and I still have things I need to get ready before Halloween night for One Night of Terror. Everyone at Kim’s Krypt is great to work with, and it’s fun throwing around our different ideas and viewpoints. We always have a good time.
Haunted House News: What night will your group be working at Kims Krypt. Do you have any days set yet?
Jason Mccarty:
Our crew will be volunteering on different nights. Mostly Friday’s and Sunday’s. Of course we will be running One Night of Terror on Halloween night. (See our website for a full listing of the members that help out with One Night of Terror)
Haunted House News:
Why should haunt fans visit your One Night of Terror yard haunt this Halloween?
Jason Mccarty:
In the past years we just had our guest walk up to the porch to get their candy, and the yard would be completely open. This year we are separating the yard into mini rooms with a u shaped hallway. This should make it feel more like a haunted walk through. There may not be many rooms, but we do our best to scare or entertain you during your visit.
Thank You!
